New Northeast Detention Center in Newark/Trenton, NJ
ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has chosen New Jersey as the location for one of five new immigration detention facilities across the U.S. The New Jersey center will actually be held on three separate sites, some controlled by Essex County and others by the private corporation CEC (Community Education Centers) in the cities of Newark and Trenton.
Pennsylvania's York and Pike Counties were also under consideration by ICE for the new Northeast detention center, but were not selected.
Upper Mount Bethel Township supervisors faced a hostile, overflow crowd Monday night (Nov. 8, 2010) as they explained they couldn't discuss a proposed federal detention center because they haven't received any plans yet. About 100 people showed up for the supervisors meeting to protest the proposed detention center, which was endorsed last month by Northampton County Council.
